I was insanely impressed with all of my fellow peers’ self-portraits. Each were so unique and displayed everyone’s individual expertise and interests, which was just so special. I enjoyed learning about “data moshing” in Tristans and Trevors films. I love stop motion and I think Daniel did a really great job executing this in his film. Anthony’s film was very appealing to me and was an interesting take on the assignment. I appreciated the humor in Will and Kyles films. I loved Destiny’s light and dark contrast (and David Bowie makeup). Molly did an excellent job in giving me a sense of what life is like with claustrophobia with her soundscape and color contrasts. I was really intrigued with Charles’ “confessional” style film, it had me wanting more. Ashley’s flower metaphor was amazing. Austin’s film was so touching, and I agree with everything his family said! I really liked how intimate Marika’s film to her boyfriend felt. I liked how of Rory’s film was sort-of in chapters, she has many different sides to her and she displayed every one in these different parts of her film.  

I think I could have been a lot more creative with my project. I liked my intentions but, to me, it turned out sort of cliché and I don’t think it portrays my personality at all. I think that’s because I went into it a bit reserved. I’m sad I couldn’t follow through with my first vision.

The Student 7 spoke to me in particular because I value doing all those things but sometimes they get pushed to the back of my head and are sadly forgotten. When writing my goals for this year I'm going to try to incorporate more things that align with these guidelines to get the most out of my senior year. I think many of the rules go hand-in-hand, for example I found a love for French cinema by taking a class spontaneously leading to me viewing a lot more foreign and cult cinema and in turn I began attempting to create my own atypical projects. Naming, and Defining, Avant-Garde or Experimental Film The fact that experimental films is undefinable is the pure essence of the mode. There are no parameters or limitations to what can be deemed experimental and that's what I consider to be the main beauty of it. I think as the mode progressive and grows, one term will become more universal. Having said that, I don't see anything wrong with this mode having multiple names. ...

Self-Portrait revision and Group Project Role

The way OK Go! Came up their name is great. It just goes to show how much impact a teacher can have on their students. My favorite video was One Moment. I can’t imagine what frame rate they used to capture that perfectly in slow motion. I also really liked Writings on the Wall. It was mind-blowing and stressful to me at the same time knowing if they made one little mistake, the whole video would be ruined. I began experimenting with overlaying my video with drawing/animation, but it turned out really badly. There wasn’t a tablet to check out that I could use, and my mousepad just couldn’t make smooth enough lines for my liking. So, I decided to take a different route and overlay images of social media and how the outside world might perceive me. Then I followed that with my positive affirmations. From Art House to Cinema and Filmmaker presentations

      "From Art House to Cinema" by Rebecca Alvin     I think microcinemas hold immense cultural value. Sure, it is nice to sit in luxurious reclining seats in a giant multiplex but the authenticity and intimate experience in an independent cine-club is something really special and rare nowadays. In regard to experience cinema in one’s own home, it may be more ‘personalized but less ‘personal’. Attending an independent art house gives you a rare and personalized connection with the artists and other cinephiles around you. This is why I love going to Jengo’s Playhouse during Cucalorus. It is a small intimate place and the viewers are there because they want to have that close encounter with that certain film or artist.    Jonas Mekas' story was really remarkable.
